In a shocking incident, a soldier S. Kulanthaivel was reportedly caught by local youth after snatching a gold chain from S. Kamatchi, an elderly woman in Ooranipatti Street, Srivilliputtur on Saturday night.
Police said the victim from Mariammankoil Street returned home from a store around 7.15 p.m. when an unidentified person snatched her 2.4 sovereign gold chain from her.
Even if she gave the alarm, the robber followed.
In the woman’s alarm, some local young men gave him a distance to the popular chase before the robber fell.
The young man overwhelmed him. The robbers were then handed over to the Srivilliputtur town police.
Police said the defendant was a soldier and had been on leave to go home. Further inquiries are underway.
