Tahawwur Rana extradition case: What happened in Mumbai terrorist attacks accused of land in India on 26/11?

Tahawwur Rana, one of the accomplices in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack, is scheduled to be extradited from the United States to India on Thursday (April 10, 2025).

Rana was taken to India after his last attempt to escape extradition failed when the U.S. Supreme Court Justice rejected his application.

According to officials, a multi-agency team has gone to the United States to bring him to India.

What is Lana being accused of?

Upon arrival in India, Rana will be escorted to the National Agency for Investigation (NIA) headquarters for further inquiry. Outside Patiala House Court in Delhi, the safety of Rana is expected to be produced before Judge Nia on April 10.

The union’s interior ministry said that Narender Mann will be the special prosecutor for the trial and other matters related to the National Bureau of Investigation (NIA) case RC-04/2009/NIA/DLI (Mumbai attack).

In addition to being charged in the 2009 Mumbai terrorist attack, Tahawwur Rana was wanted for his role in planning the National Defense Academy and the attacks at the Jewish Outreach Centre in Mumbai.

Where would he live?

Tahawwur Rana may be placed in a high security ward in Tihar Prison in Delhi. Prison sources said all necessary preparations were done in prison.

Will this affect Headley?

David Headley pleaded guilty to the Mumbai terrorist attack and is currently serving 35 years in U.S. prison after being convicted by a U.S. court in 2010.

Although India continued to push for his extradition, U.S. authorities refused because Headley immediately took responsibility and admitted all charges.
