Chennai:Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday that it will only be implemented in 2030 since opposition to “one country, one election”.
Speaking at the “One Country, One Election” seminar held by Semba Sungya District SRM University, she said that the president only calls after the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. “We plan to implement the proposal only in 2030, why are you against it now,” she asked.
She said that every time an election is held, it costs a lot of money and the country faces 400 elections since independence. Finance Minister said the rupee. Rs 1 billion crore was spent in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, and polls were conducted simultaneously and the conference was reduced by Rs. 120 million, can be used for people’s welfare.
Neilmara said the “one country, one election” plan will improve the country’s economy, and several groups have expressed good views. Neilmara said frequent elections have resulted in three months of shutdowns on all infrastructure work, including road paving, affecting the people, adding that even ambulance transport was affected during the election campaign.
The minister said the government has been talking about the idea for the past decade. “Everyone should know what the country needs and see why this idea is facing opposition.”
In 2019, a whole party meeting was held at “One Country, One Election” and participated in the 19th party participation, 16 of which accepted the idea. She recalled that the DMK, Congress and the AAM AADMI party expressed opposition to the plan. At the next plenary meeting, 47 political parties participated in the proposal, with 32 of them supporting the proposal. Those who support this idea include BJP, AIADMK and PMK.
The minister further stated that Stalin opposed the idea written by his father Karunanidhi in his autobiography “nenjukku needhi”. The minister said those who opposed the plan had earlier supported the plan, adding that they were doing it for the political gain. She asked for support from everyone, because it was necessary for the country.
