The Bicentennial Feast of St. Joseph’s Cathedral

Hyderabad: The Catholic community in Hyderabad marks a historic milestone in the Archdiocese of Hyderabad, ending the bicentennial celebration of the Gunners in St. Joseph’s Cathedral. The large event is reminiscent of the Vatican celebrations with the dedication of newly restored cathedrals, Presbyterians, parish pastoral centres, worship churches and shrines. Flower tribute was paid on the grave of the former bishop inside the cathedral house.
A solemn parade led by Cardinal Poola Anthony participated in 30 bishops, about 200 priests and nuns, and hundreds of faithful loyalties. The parade begins at the Rosary Monastery and heads to the cathedral, stopping at a new dedicated location along the route. Next comes a grand open-air mass, during which the doves are released as symbols of peace.
Cardinal Anthony describes the bicentennial as a historic event in the Archdiocese of Hyderabad and proves a 200-year unwavering faith. He explained: “This celebration is a tribute to Father Murphy’s legacy.
Sagili Prakash of Kurnool spoke at the party, urging believers to live a life of meaning and service. “Your life should be remembered for the kindness you do,” he said.
Father Raju Ale’tex, deputy secretary of the Telugu Catholic Bishops’ Committee and former parish priest of the Cathedral, emphasized the importance of the Twin Towers of the Cathedral. He said: “One tower represents the ministry of God and the Church, while another represents the service to the people.”
Thousands of believers participated in the praise and worship activities, and Homas Joseph Lloyd led the prayers of the believers, including prayers for the Pope and all clergy who served the cathedral.
Aruna Bahuguna of IPS has praised the Catholic community for its contribution to Telangana and Hyderabad over the past two centuries. She said: “The Catholic community has always been a beacon of love and service, providing a quality education for all communities and classes.
The event also features cultural performances, with children performing traditional dances, including welcome dances. The parade was accompanied by the sight of the Royal Umbrellas adding to the grandeur of the occasion. Several famous Christian leaders were present to witness the celebration.
The celebration ended with a musical performance in the Archdiocese of Hyderabad. Angelica Maria Joseph, a member of the choir, expressed her delight in being part of a historic moment. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’m happy to sing for this celebration,” she shared.
