Max Verstappen “frustrated” as Red Bull decides to fire Liam Lawson after two F1 matches

The disappointing note is coming to an end after Liam Lawson’s first Formula season with Red Bull just two games. In a disappointing performance of the 2025 season, New Zealand’s Lawson faced the axe, opening the Australian Formula One and Shanghai’s Chinese GP in Melbourne.

Red Bull managers’ decision to replace Lawson with Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda was not going well in New Zealand and in the current F1 world champion Max Verstappen. The latter is also the Red Bull flag bearer and Lawson teammate on the F1 Grand Prix Tour.

Verstappen reportedly was frustrated by the decision to fire Red Bulls Lawson after just two games. Lawson used to race before the race before the race, and the car was easier to drive, he said.
The F1 World Champion said: “That car is easier to drive than we do. I noticed when I talked to Liam. Last year, the difference between him and Yuki was not huge.

New Zealand Sports Minister Mark Mitchell jumped into the controversial Lawson. He told the New Zealand media: “I’m disappointed if he doesn’t compete in Red Bull, but I’m excited that if he at least goes back to racing, he can go and show everyone his abilities.”

New Zealand racing analyst Bob McMurray vented his anger at Lawson, calling the decision a “bsurd situation they’ve been trapped in, and I think it’s all Red Bull’s fault, not Liam, not Liam. She asked Red Bull management and strategists why they didn’t give Lawson enough time to test the Red Bull car. Lawson crashed and failed to finish the race in the Australian Grand Prix. His race during the Chinese Grand Prix wasn’t that dramatic, but he finished 18th. In the 2025 season, he hasn’t scored yet.

Since 2018, Red Bull has regularly changed and chopped up its second driver. While Verstappen has been a constant, the team has partnered with Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez and Lawson. With Tsunoda to replace Lawson, who is the Japanese Grand Prix on the Suzuki Tour on April 6, Verstappen will have his sixth partner over the past seven years.
